About Adventures In Savannah

Bob Bryson
Growing up in Western North Carolina was a wonderful experience. My father managed the Gray Line Sightseeing company and put me to work there when I was 6 years old. This was way back in the 1950’s and I was paid ½ a cent for each bag that I loaded on the bus. This was back before the baggage bins were underneath the bus so Dad threw me up inside the luggage compartment and tossed the bags in behind me. Because of this I got the "tourism" bug early and who wouldn’t being six years old and making as much as $2 a week.

I served overseas in the US Army and when I returned home I continued both my education and working in the tourism industry. After giving my first tour at age 12 I eventually ended up as a licensed guide in Washington DC and Charleston SC as well as knowing the Smokey Mountains like the back of my hand.

I met Mary on a tour of Savannah – imagine that. After a chance remark by my ex-wife I moved to Savannah and Mary and I formed Adventures in Savannah. And life has certainly been an adventure ever since.

Mary Waitzman
Mary comes to us via Birmingham, AL and Atlanta, GA. She first came to the Savannah area to go to school at Georgia Southern University. She did a stint with VISTA and then returned to the area she had fallen in love with.

After trying her hand a various social work programs she gave up saving the world for saving the south. Her tourism career started as a carriage driver – she loves those horses – and anybody who hasn’t heard her "dead bus" story just hasn’t toured Savannah properly.

Ten years ago she and several other ladies started a receptive tour operation. Through the years she pioneered the Girl Scout Program for them. After a while, she decided that she needed greater control over the services so a chance remark by Bob’s ex-wife has led to the creation of Adventures in Savannah.

Her main goal is to make history come alive for all of our visitors. As such she is mainly responsible for the training of our guides. Her experiences as a lecturer for Elderhostel doesn’t hurt her in this either. We’re all a little bit better for having Mary emphasize the fun and entertaining part of our jobs.

Gary Smiley
Gary grew up just south of Savannah, and except for military and college time, has resided here all his life. His family arrived here from Scotland in the mid-1700’s and has subsequently spread far and wide, with much of the clan still located in coastal Georgia. He served in the military in the Air Force. He is a retired hospital financial officer, with a second retirement as a dotcom sales manager. As a young adult, Gary was a radio announcer, and has extensive public speaking experience. He was active in theatre for many years as an actor and director.

Gary’s love of history, and particularly that of the Savannah area, led him to become a tour guide. He is happiest while conducting historic and informational tours of Savannah and enjoys meeting people from all over the world.

Gary is now a book author. The website for his book is:

Robert Markwalter
Bob moved to Savannah from Indiana in 2000, but his father was born here and his family is from Augusta. His great-aunts lived in an ante-bellum home on one of Augusta’s broad avenues. The house was raised on brick pillars, and he can remember the long staircase leading to the porch and, inside, the pocket doors, doily-draped sofas and chairs, and two aging ladies who had their cook make toast on a rack in the oven.

Bob has a degree in history and years of experience as a tour guide. He has written self-guided walking tours and newspaper and magazine articles about historic subjects. He enjoys sharing Savannah’s beauty, charms, and many quirks with our visitors. He even likes grits (must be a genetic thing).
